JDO’s partnerships engage students in authentic experiences
that allow students to see issues at a variety of scales. Students in Barbara Furtadoo’s
Global Citizenship class at Escola Eleva- Barra in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Ann
Czeponis’s 8th Grade Science students at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional School in
Pennsylvania, USA are investigating and promoting Sustainability in their schools.
Sustainability is a topic that can be considered at a local and global scale.
Furtado and Czeponis have designed a collaboration that is
student-driven. The international student groups will work together to identify an
actionable project in their schools. Mrs. Czeponis has been awarded a PPL Empowering Educators grant to support the project
implementation. PPL Foundation awards grants annually to empower educators who spark
their students’ imaginations. The PPL Empowering Educators program is designed to help
K-12 teachers provide hands-on learning opportunities to enhance the classroom
experience and spark students’ interest in science, technology, engineering and math
(STEM).
